Lions sell

Following an embarrassing 28-14 loss at home to the Seattle Seahawks, the Detroit Lions made some noise this week by trading Golden Tate to the Eagles for a 3rd-round pick. Detroit fell to 3-4 on the season in the loss and they are now 5-2 against the spread and 5-2 with the over.

Detroit is still a pretty sound offense even without Tate, as the team averages 24.4 points and 384.9 yards per game. Tate was the leading receiver with 44 catches for 517 yards, but Matthew Stafford has plenty of weapons. Stafford has thrown for 1,912 yards and 14 touchdowns this year and the team has hopes to improve its run game behind rookie Kerryon Johnson. He has rushed for 466 yards this season. Defensively, Detroit is giving up 26.6 points and 390.4 yards per game. Their run defense has really struggled, allowing 144.6 yards per contest. Despite that, the unit has amassed 23 sacks.
Vikings beat up

The Minnesota Vikings are coming off a 30-20 loss at home to the Saints to snap a 3-game winning streak. The Vikings are now 4-3-1 on the season, 4-3-1 against the spread and 4-4 with the over/under total. They are 3-1 with the under at home.

Minnesota is averaging 24.6 points and 402.3 yards per game on offense this season. They come into this week’s game with some injuries up front, including to left tackle Riley Reiff. He is uncertain to play this weekend with a foot injury. Minnesota already has a poor run game, with Dalvin Cook continuing to miss time with a hamstring injury. Latavius Murray is the leading rusher on the team with 386 yards and four scores. Kirk Cousins has thrown or 2,521 yards and 16 touchdowns, but has been sacked 23 times. Adam Thielen is having an MVP-type season at receiver. He has 74 catches for 925 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, Minnesota is allowing just 24.4 points and 357.3 yards per game. The unit has 21 sacks and is led by Danielle Hunter, who has eight sacks.

Prediction:

The Vikings should have a pretty simple game plan for Sunday. If they watched the Seahawks, Minnesota should pound the rock and then look to play action pass for big plays. Detroit is likely to struggle to run the ball against Minnesota, which will hurt its ability to throw downfield. Without Tate, it takes away a safety check for Stafford. I look for Detroit to have a low score again this week as it tries to figure out what to do without Tate.

It was almost exactly two years ago that these two quarterbacks set the college football universe ablaze.

In a showdown for the ages between Texas Tech and the University of Oklahoma, the Red Raiders’ Patrick Mahomes and the Sooners’ Baker Mayfield combined for an NCAA-record 1,279 passing yards and 14 total touchdowns, with Oklahoma eventually emerging victorious by a score of 66-59.

It was simply an incredible display of offense by two quarterbacks destined to play on Sundays.

“There were a lot of talented people on the field,” Mahomes recalled. “It was one of those Big 12 shootouts, and if you look at the rosters, there are a lot of players [from that game] that are in the NFL now. I wish we would have won, but just being a part of something like that was awesome.”

Mahomes, of course, is continuing his record-breaking ways for the Kansas City Chiefs while Mayfield, whom the Cleveland Browns selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, is in the midst of his first season as a professional.

Both players have found their fair share of success this season and, as the Chiefs take on the Browns this Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium, the two quarterbacks will meet for the first time in the NFL.

Mahomes has engineered the league’s top offense through eight games this year, leading the Chiefs to at least 30 points in all but one contest. Kansas City has racked up the most points (290), touchdowns (36) and plays of at least 20 yards (49) in the league while ranking second in scrimmage yards (3,445) and first downs (193), smashing a handful of franchise records in the process.

It’s been a joy to watch as the Chiefs have assembled the top record in the AFC behind the right arm of their 23-year-old quarterback.

Mayfield, meanwhile, has often flashed the playmaking ability that won him the Heisman Trophy in 2017 – with multiple touchdown passes in three of his five starts under center – but it hasn’t translated to the standings.

The Browns have just two wins on the year, culminating in the firing of Head Coach Hue Jackson and Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley earlier this week.
That turnover withstanding, the Chiefs are not taking Cleveland lightly.

“We don’t get into that. We know there is talent there and coaching there,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “What we do is focus on the process of getting ready to play a football team and eliminate all those other things. That is what we can control.”

Indeed, the Browns have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.

Rookie tailback Nick Chubb is averaging 6.12 yards per carry on the year, and pass-catchers Antonio Callaway, Jarvis Landry and David Njoku have each hauled in multiple touchdowns.

Landry leads that group with 49 catches for 528 yards, and with an AFC-most 94 targets this season, the five-year veteran has consistently been Mayfield’s top option on offense.

Though despite the contributions of Mayfield, Landry and the rest of the Browns’ playmakers, Cleveland has struggled to score points lately. They’ve tallied fewer than 20 points in three of their last four games, and as recently as last week, the Browns amassed only 237 yards of offense.

That’s a trend the Chiefs’ defense, which has impressed in each of the last two weeks, will look to prolong on Sunday, and much of that centers around the pass rush.

Led by linebacker Dee Ford, whose six sacks in October garnered AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors, Kansas City has brought down the opposing quarterback the second-most times of any team in the league this season (24), while the Browns, fittingly, have yielded the most sacks in the NFL (33).

“[Mayfield] can extend plays with his feet and he can make all the throws, so we need to do a good job of getting in his face,” said linebacker Reggie Ragland. “We have to let Dee, [linebacker] Breeland [Speaks] and our big guys up front get to work, and I think we have a shot of getting to him.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look for their second road win of the season to get back to a .500 record. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have lost six of their last seven road games. Jameis Winston is completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 1,181 yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick and have combined for 19 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions this season. Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson have combined for 1,364 receiving yards and eight touchdowns while O.J. Howard has 24 receptions. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ground game is averaging 91.3 yards per contest, and Peyton Barber leads the way with 345 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Tampa Bay is allowing 33.3 points and 415.3 yards per game. Lavonte David leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 56 tackles, Jason Pierre-Paul has eight sacks and Justin Evans has one interception.

The Carolina Panthers look to stay hot after winning four of their last five games. The Carolina Panthers have won each of their last nine home games. Cam Newton is completing 66.4 percent of his passes for 1,646 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. Newton has two or more touchdown passes in each of his last six games. Devin Funchess and Christian McCaffrey have combined for 701 receiving yards and five touchdowns while DJ Moore has 18 receptions. The Carolina Panthers ground game is averaging 138.9 yards per contest, and McCaffrey leads the way with 423 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Carolina is allowing 21.7 points and 351 yards per game. Luke Kuechly leads the Carolina Panthers with 57 tackles, Mario Addison has 4.5 sacks and Donte Jackson has three interceptions.

The Buccaneers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. NFC, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NFC South and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in November, 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. NFC South. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have given up 30 or more points in five of their seven games this season and have a constant quarterback mess going on. Winston has been a turnover machine in the few games he’s played, and while Fitzpatrick seems to make plays out of nowhere, you’re just waiting for the so called magic to come to an end. The Carolina Panthers haven’t lost a home game since October 12 of last year and are outscoring teams by 6.25 points at home this season. The Panthers are a good football team on both sides of the ball and the offense seems to be getting better each week. I don’t trust the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, especially on the road. I’ll take the Panthers to win this game by a touchdown.

The Chicago Bears will visit the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday in cross-conference NFL activity.

Chicago comes into this game with a 4-3 record so far. The Bears’ losses have come against the Packers, Dolphins and Patriots, while they’ve taken out the Seahawks, Cardinals, Bucs and Jets.

In the New York game, Chicago QB Mitch Trubisky put up 220 yards and two scores, while Jordan Howard rushed for 81 and a TD. Tarik Cohen’s 70-yard TD catch gave him the lead amongst the Bears receivers.

Over on the Bills’ side, they’re 2-6 so far this year. Buffalo’s wins have come against the Vikings and Titans, while they’ve fallen to the Ravens, Chargers, Packers, Texans, Colts and Patriots.

In the Pats game, Buffalo QB Derek Anderson put up 290 yards and a pick, while Chris Ivory led the rush on 34 yards. LeSean McCoy was the top receiver with 82 yards off six grabs out of the backfield.

The Bears are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five in Week 9 and 4-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record. Chicago is 6-13 ATS in their last 19 road games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 following a straight-up win.

Meanwhile, the Bills are 1-4 ATS in their last five in November and 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight in Week 9. The over is 4-1 in Buffalo’s last five in November and the under is 4-1 in the last five head-to-head meetings between these two teams.

These teams met earlier this year, but since it was Week 4 of the preseason there is little to no relevance there. For what it’s worth, the Bills won 28-27.

Chicago got a nice lift from that victory over the Jets, even though it took a little while for the Bears to find their footing in that game. Chicago has some good things to build on, especially the solid play of their O-line.

I’m pretty confident about the Bears here, but it might be worth checking the weather reports leading up to the game to see what sort of play style we can expect. Regardless, I’m going to stick with Chicago.

On Sept. 30, The Baltimore Ravens went into Pittsburgh and defeated the Steelers 26-14, putting themselves in the early driver’s seat of the AFC North race. The Ravens moved to 3-1, while their rivals fell to 1-2-1.

But Baltimore has basically driven the car off the road since. The Ravens have gone 1-3 including an ugly overtime loss to the Browns and a loss to New Orleans when star kicker Justin Tucker missed the game-tying PAT in the final minute. Meanwhile, The Steelers haven’t lost since September, going 3-0 with a bye week tossed in.

If the Ravens have any designs on staying in the AFC North race with the Steelers and 5-3 Bengals, they need to win this game heading into their bye week.

Pittsburgh at Baltimore

Three Things to Watch

1. Footballs will fill the air

It’s no surprise that the Steelers rank fourth in the NFL in pass attempts. They have routinely ranked in the top 10 in recent seasons, and with running back Le’Veon Bell still holding out, it makes sense to put games in Ben Roethlisberger’s hands. But it’s stunning to see that the Ravens have attempted more passes than anyone in the NFL this season at more than 44 per game. Granted, the Baltimore running game has been a disappointment, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry (31st in the NFL). But obviously Joe Flacco has gotten comfortable very quickly with his three top targets. Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead are all in their first season with Baltimore, but all have more than 60 targets. Neither team is going to feel the need to grind this one out.

2. Still, the Steelers need to run it a little

When the Steelers rush for at least 100 yards, they are 3-0-1 this season. When they don’t, they are 1-2, including a season-low 19 yards on the ground when these teams first met. Pittsburgh hadn’t been held under 20 yards rushing in a game since 1970. The Ravens lead the NFL in scoring defense and total defense, but they are tougher against the pass, ranking second in yards allowed and fourth in touchdown passes allowed. They are 11th against the run, which isn’t bad, but James Conner has been on a roll for the Steelers. During their three-game winning streak, Conner has carried 64 times for 367 yards and six scores and has at least 110 yards in each game. If he can get anywhere near that mark, it would be good news for the Steelers.
